BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Chino Hills, is the first earthquake proof mandir in the world.
It used something called as a “base-isolator technology”. This innovative design allows the temple to withstand seismic activities.
It works by creating a shock-absorber system between the foundation of the building and the building itself.

Common types of base-isolators
- lead-rubber bearings
- friction pendulum bearings
They move and absorb the ground moving and cause much lesser impact on the structure ahead. However, sustained earthquake and/or tall skyscrapers are still susceptible to damage.
